What is Companies House Webfiling Service?

Companies House ‘Webfiling’ service enables companies to file forms online. To do this, you must enter your email address and Security Code. You also require the company number (you can find this on your Certificate of Incorporation) and the ‘Authentication Code’ for that company. The Security Code and Authentication Code can be ordered when you register for the Webfiling Service via Companies House website. Examples of forms that can be filed online include AP01, AD01, SH01, Accounts and Annual Returns.

Please be advised that Companies House and Hanover Company Services Ltd are unable to disclose this code over the telephone. You may only request the code to be sent by post to your registered office address. We strongly advise that you do not disclose this code to anyone, other than directors who will be filing documents on behalf of the company. Companies House have recently issued a security alert, as they have received reports of third parties contacting limited companies, claiming to be Companies House representatives, requesting confirmation of the company’s webfiling authentication code. Please be aware that Companies House and Hanover Company Services Ltd personnel will never contact you by telephone to try to ascertain your WebFiling Authentication Codes.

What are the benefits of filing forms by Companies House Webfiling Service?

  • It’s cheaper - There is no need to print the forms and no need for postal charges. It is also cheaper to file your Annual Return online.
  • Pre-populated forms – e.g. Once you have filed your first Annual Return, subsequent Annual Returns are pre-populated, so that you only need to amend the document if changes have been made (e.g. new shareholders or a change in directorship). The forms also give drop-down options to help you select the correct requirements (e.g. GBP for share currency) and enable you to match a property address with the correct postcode.
  • Built-in checks – The forms have built-in checks to minimise rejection (e.g. it highlights missed fields)
  • Emailed receipt of documents – Companies House will contact you by email to confirm they have received your form for processing. They will send you a second email to confirm if the form has been accepted or rejected. If the form is accepted, there is nothing more for you to do. If the form is rejected, you will need to complete and resend the corrected form.
  • Security – Companies House Webfiling Service is the most secure way to keep up to date with your limited company’s filing history.
  • Flexibility – The service is available 24/7, so you can file documents when it is convenient for you.

What if I prefer to file forms on paper?

You may file documents in paper form if you wish. However it is cheaper and quicker to file your Annual Return online.
